How does it work?

Students join their virtual reality classroom with a certified VR teacher and classmates. Learning is facilitated by the teacher with group and independent virtual reality experiences. Students will also complete learning experiences offline as directed by the teacher, curriculum, and needs of the students. Students also have the opportunity to collaborate and meet with peers in-person throughout the course of the school year.

Common Questions

Do we need technology experience to be successful?

No technology experience is needed to get started. Students get oriented quickly, and we have a support team ready to help each step of the way.

Is virtual reality safe for students?

Yes, virtual reality is safe for students. Students and families are taught how to safely use the virtual reality headsets in their physical environment. Online and inside the virtual world, students operate in a secured environment that does not allow students to access any restricted sites, apps, or content. Virtual Reality learning sessions are limited to no more than 30 mins per subject rotation. VHCS has adopted a Student and Employee Code of Conduct and an Acceptable Use Policy for all school-sponsored activities online and offline.

Do I have to pay tuition?

No. Virtual Horizons Charter School is a public school and free to families. At the time of enrollment a list of possible school fees for extracurricular or other activities will be provided.

Does the school provide services for students on an IEP?

Yes. Virtual Reality learning supports the needs of students with an IEP. We will work with you to understand the needs of your student and to adapt teaching and learning to those needs. This is a home-based virtual learning program and no facilities are available to send students to during the day.

Do you cover all of the curriculum my student needs?

Our curriculum is aligned to the Utah State Core and addresses all subjects and standards. Electives and extracurricular activities are also provided.

Which grades are your enrolling?

Virtual Horizons Charter School will open for grades 4 - 8 for the 2025-26 school year. We will expand up through 12th grade in subsequent years. If your student is outside of grades 4-8, please contact us to be notified as we expand.

What does a typical school day look like?

A typical instructional day will include several virtual reality instructional sessions based on subject and student challenge level. Students will also complete learning assignments, activities, and projects offline. Students will not spend all day in virtual reality and learning sessions will be no longer than 20-30 mins. per subject rotation schedule. Some virtual reality learning will be synchronous with a teacher and classmates and some learning will be self-guided asynchronous. See a day in the life of a typical student.

What is my role as a parent?

Virtual Horizons parents are heroes. They often juggle busy schedules between work and home. As a Virtual Horizons parent, you can depend on us to work hard toward your student’s academic success. We depend on you to encourage your student, check in on their progress, and communicate with teachers.

We also have opportunities for parents to volunteer. Parents help us to organize and support events and activities that bring together our Virtual Horizons community.
